Your First Budget in One Evening

An ordered procedure: list income, sort expenses into needs and wants, and assign the 50/30/20 split — all in one sitting.

The procedure starts with income. List after-tax income for the month, because gross salary overstates what can actually be assigned. Write the net figure at the top of the page; every later number hangs off it.

Next, list fixed expenses: rent, utilities, subscriptions. These are counted first because they cannot be adjusted mid-month. Subtract them from after-tax income to get the amount that is genuinely available for sorting.

On narrow screens, swipe or scroll the plate sideways.

Sort the remainder into needs and wants. Groceries and minimum debt payments are needs; dining out and entertainment are wants. The needs-wants-savings table makes the sort visible and keeps the categories honest.

Now assign the 50/30/20 split: 50 percent of post-tax income to needs, 30 percent to wants, 20 percent to savings and debt repayment. If fixed expenses already exceed the needs share, the wants category absorbs the shortfall first.

Finally, set the review. A weekly 15-minute check compares actual spending against the assigned split and catches category drift earlier than a monthly post-mortem. The whole build takes one evening; the review takes a quarter of an hour a week.
